National Crafts Achievement Award Wood Carving from the Heart :Chi-Tsun Chen's Wood Carving Art Exhibition   Exhibition Overview  Wood carving is a three-dimensional art in which artisans select suitable wood and use carving tools with focused mindfulness and refined skills to intricately sculpt wooden materials. Unlike additive processes, wood carving embodies a “subtractive approach,” where creators continuously refine and distill the essence of their vision through careful removal, integrating their thoughts and creativity into the process.    As one of Taiwan's significant traditional crafts, wood carving is evident in its applications for deity statues, altars, and various wooden objects used in temples and households. In the carefully condensed space shaped by each thoughtful chisel stroke, wood carving’s subtractive artistry not only reflects the flourishing development of wood carving craftsmanship and folk beliefs but also showcases its inseparable connection to everyday life and culture.    Master Chi-Tsun Chen, who began his apprenticeship under Fuzhou-style deity carver Yi-Shui Lin in 1976, has dedicated nearly fifty years to the field of wood carving. He has inherited the essence of traditional wood carving while actively seeking to enhance his techniques and break through the boundaries of knowledge and experience. With relentless artisan spirit, he has pioneered a new perspective that blends traditional crafts with modern art, promoting wood carving through diverse interdisciplinary collaborations.    In 2020 Chen was honored with the National Crafts Achievement Award. His works encompass both traditional wood carvings and modern sculpture series, continuously accumulating and passing down knowledge like the growth rings of a tree, steadily evolving with the times and extending into the future. This embodies the most vibrant and moving vitality of contemporary Taiwanese wood carving craftsmanship.    This special exhibition, titled Wood Carving from the Heart, showcases 66 meticulously selected works. It is divided into four thematic sections: "The Beginning of Apprenticeship," "Accumulating Artistic Knowledge," "Observing the Contemporary," and "A Symphony of Diversity." These sections highlight how Chi-Tsun Chen transitioned from traditional wood carving to modern sculpture, overcoming challenges posed by technological advancements and evolving societal demands. The exhibition illustrates his ongoing journey of personal growth, relentless pursuit of innovation, and remarkable breakthroughs in the art of wood carving.

Crafts and Slow Living : Cultivating Life's Aesthetics and a Sustainable Future   Amid the swift currents of modern society, craftsmanship emerges with a slow yet steadfast spirit, rooting deeply in the land and weaving into daily life. It invites us to rediscover the essence of living. In 2025, marking the 70+1 anniversary of the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute, the institute presents the exhibition Artful Origins: Radiant Stars on the Craft Map. Anchored in the theme Living Craft, Craft Living, the exhibition explores how artisans intertwine skill, aesthetics, and ingenuity, transforming craftsmanship into a sustainable force that resonates with the times.   This exhibition adopts a dual-themed approach to celebrate the diversity of craft art from two distinct perspectives. The first, SLOW Living, focuses on the philosophy of slow craftsmanship and delves into the far-reaching impacts of crafts on health and sustainability. The second, LOHAS Living, centers on aesthetics, illustrating how crafts enrich our lives and inspire cultural imagination. Together, these themes converge into the concept of SLOHAS Crafts and Slow Living.   From the natural warmth of raw materials to the pragmatic beauty of innovative designs, every crafted piece is more than a blend of function and art-it serves as a profound dialogue between humanity and nature. Like radiant stars across Taiwan' s craft map, artisans' studios become connected through this exhibition, linking the warmth of Taiwan' s land, cultural roots, and human spirit.   This journey invites visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of craft and the art of life. It proposes a vision for the future: to experience the wisdom of craftsmanship in the rhythm of slow living and to touch the power of sustainability through vibrant artistry. Together, we can build a world where health, aesthetics, and sustainability are interwoven, illuminating life with the radiance of crafts. The Art of Sustainability 1/23(Thurs.)-3/16(Sun.) A Dialogue with Materials, A Harmony with Nature   As global attention increasingly focuses on environmental issues, craftsmanship offers a unique response to the call for sustainability, reflecting the wisdom of coexistence between humans and nature. The Art of Sustainability centers on natural materials and artisanal mastery, emphasizing the use of eco-friendly and recycled resources. Through exceptional craftsmanship, the works express reverence for the land and explore the possibilities of regeneration. The exhibition spans a wide range of mediums, including ceramics, woodwork, metalwork, and bamboo weaving, presenting a complete vision of sustainability-from material selection to design and creation. Visitors are invited to reflect on the value and role of craftsmanship in fostering a sustainable lifestyle. The Source of Happiness 3/22(Sat.)-5/11(Sun.) From Objects to Life: Illuminating Joyful Living through Crafts   Craftsmanship transcends the creation of beauty; it enhances the quality of life itself. The Source of Happiness delves into the aesthetics of craft in everyday living, tracing the transformation of objects from mere functionality to vessels of emotional connection. The exhibition showcases works that harmonize practicality and artistry, from ceramic tableware and wooden furniture to textile crafts. These pieces illustrate how craftsmanship seamlessly integrates into contemporary life, infusing daily routines with warmth and a sense of well-being. Through intricate designs and the tactile essence of handmade works, visitors can experience a silent yet profound poetry of life and craft, resonating deeply with the beauty of simplicity.
