Chinese Calligraphy (Xu Fa) is usually in black and white, opposites that contrast dramatically. Colors can also have dramatic contrasts as poetically expressed by Marc Chagall, “All colors are the friends of their neighours and the lovers of their opposites.” This is a central theme in these pictures coupled with a curiosity of the origins of the words, some as pictograms transformed into the early scripts of Da Zhuang or Xiao Zhuang. It’s a learning process for me, but I am also surprised on asking local Taiwanese the meaning of these ancient characters how many don’t know or take some time until they recognize what these words actually mean. How many are obvious to you? Andrew Starck is an Anglo/Irish artist who graduated in a prestigious year group at UAL (St. Martin’s) in the 1980’s with Peter Doig, John Galliano, Haydn Cottam and Dean Bright.
